Ian Murphy Art Workshop Inspires Year 11 GCSE Students
On Thursday, 12th, and Friday, 13th September, our Year 11 GCSE Art students were fortunate to take part in a two-day art workshop led by renowned contemporary British Fine Artist, Ian Murphy. Known for his powerful tonal drawings and atmospheric, mixed-media oil paintings of architectural scenes, Ian brought his expertise to our school, offering students a unique and inspiring experience.
The workshop was fast-paced, exciting, and certainly challenging for all involved. Ian emphasised that the true success of the workshop extends beyond the immediate results. It lies in how the techniques, ideas, and visual stimuli in the students' sketchbooks will continue to inspire them in the future.
Throughout the workshop, Ian demonstrated his creative process, from initial sketches to larger, more developed works. He shared his technical skills, focusing on drawing techniques and pushing students to expand their understanding of composition. By the end of the workshop, students had created four pieces of artwork, each infused with new techniques for adding texture and layers, making their work more dynamic and expressive.
The two days were a memorable opportunity for our budding artists to learn new methods and explore their creativity in ways they hadn't before. We look forward to seeing how they continue to apply these lessons in their future projects.
Year 11 student Parshvi, said: “This was a really exciting project and allowed me to really think about how I use different materials in creating a piece of work”.
Colette O’Dwyer, headteacher, said: “I am blown away by the creativity of our students and extend our thanks to colleagues for giving them such wonderful opportunities as these”.
