Modern Foreign Language learners develop the skills and confidence to consider themselves ‘World Citizens’ knowing their place in a multicultural society that aligns seamlessly with the overarching school vision ‘to inspire young people to be confident and successful learners who contribute positively to society as responsible citizens.’ Our curriculum is designed to empower students with the ability and desire to communicate confidently in the target language with accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation fulfilling the ambitious demands of the National Curriculum. We recognise that these fundamental skills will prepare them to compete globally and when they leave us, achieve ‘bright futures.’ By embedding the school’s core values integrity, resilience, communication, curiosity and teamwork into every lesson, we enable learners to strive to improve their knowledge, to reflect on their learning and to enjoy the challenges they face when learning a new language.

The spiral curriculum allows students to revisit previous knowledge whilst developing more sophisticated vocabulary and sentence structures.  Pupils develop a competency that is both broad and deep in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing based on a sound foundation of core grammar, vocabulary and phonics. Our curriculum builds on the foundations of language learning laid in Key Stage 2; therefore, we maintain strong links with our feeder primary schools to ensure students have a smooth transition into Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, we embed the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to learn another language. Students broaden their horizon and are encouraged to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develop new ways of seeing the world. We provide a fun, stimulating and interactive experience of learning a language. Initially, students focus on the skill of speaking and gradually develop other linguistic skills. Topics are selected to engage our students and allow them to take part in meaningful conversations about themselves and the world around them for practical purposes. For example, in year 7, students learn how to talk about school life and describe a timetable and give opinions on subjects. In year 8 students build on this and describe facilities and are introduced to basic key verbs in the past tense to describe their primary school and compare with school now. In year 9 students look at higher level opinion phrases to describe their school and explore the simple future tense to describe plans for after studying.  Students are taught a variety of tenses, grammar structures, and wide-ranging vocabulary which can then be transferable to different topics.
