Bima Digital Day

On Wednesday 13th November Park High held a BIMA Digital Day 2024 for more than 60 of our GCSE Y10 Computer Science Students who met with a digital expert and competed in a sponsored, nationwide digital challenge for a chance to win £500 for the school and some fantastic prizes for themselves.

We were supported by Justina Rosu  from Purple Square, whose industry expertise complemented the guidance provided by our teachers.

BIMA Digital Day is the only initiative of its kind, it gives 11-16 year olds an insight into a world of digital careers. In the last few years, the digital industry has been growing at twice the rate of the broader economy. The Centre for Economics and Business Research agreed there is a shortage of tech and digital talent is costing the UK £21.8bn.

Each year, the challenges focus on real-world issues sponsored by leading brands. This year’s sponsors—Microsoft, RSPCA, and Burberry—posed the following challenges:

Microsoft: How can Microsoft use its technology to re-invent home learning for Secondary school students?

RSPCA: How can we use technology (like apps, advertising, VR, websites, social media, QR codes, AI and more) to educate consumers about the importance of RSPCA Assured and higher welfare farming?

Burberry: How can we highlight Burberry trench coats to a younger audience as a symbol of sustainability, supporting British craftsmanship and reducing environmental impact?

The students embraced the opportunity to engage with professionals from the tech field, gaining valuable insights into established careers. Students created a Marketing Plan and then presented it in front of the rest of the students and were judged by Justina and the teachers.Their enthusiasm and creativity were reflected in the outstanding solutions they proposed.

Student reflections:

“It helped me understand the different processes that an organisation goes through to ensure  that a product is successful and reaches as many people as possible.”

“It was fun because I was able to work with my friends creating something new. We used public speaking and teamwork and we thought about how AI can help with school work.”
