A Day in the Life: Preparing for Post-16 Education
As part of the preparations for life after Year 11, the “A Day in the Life of a Sixth Form or College Student” event took place on Friday, December 6th. This bespoke experience allowed Year 11 students to immerse themselves in academic and vocational environments beyond their current studies, sampling a variety of subjects and courses they might not have considered before.
The day was designed to broaden horizons and encourage students to step out of their comfort zones, all while providing a valuable opportunity to ask questions about their future educational pathways.
Students attending Sixth Form had the chance to try up to five subjects from a wide selection, including:
- Creative Subjects: Art, Craft & Design, Drama, Photography
- STEM Fields: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics
- Humanities and Social Sciences: History, Philosophy & Ethics, Psychology, Sociology
- Business and Politics: Economics, Business Studies, Politics
Interactive lessons brought subjects to life. For instance, students enjoyed dramatic sessions with Mrs. Molloy in Drama, while others explored new concepts in Psychology and Politics. Science enthusiasts engaged in hands-on practicals that mirrored real-world applications.
Meanwhile, students at Harrow Weald College delved into career-oriented workshops across multiple sectors, including:
- Trades and Technical Skills: Electrical Installation, Plumbing
- Health and Education: Health and Social Care, Early Years
- Creative Fields: Art and Design, Architecture, Media
- Sports and Science: Sport, Science
The feedback from Harrow College was exceptional, with staff noting that some of our students demonstrated skills at a professional level. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the practical side of college life and explore potential career paths.
The event was an inspiring and motivating experience, helping students envision their future beyond Year 11. It reinforced the importance of staying focused on their goals and reminded them of the motivation discussed in the September assemblies.
If students have questions about their future options or need additional guidance, they are encouraged to visit the Careers & Employability room next to P6 or email Mrs. Foster, our Careers and Employability Coordinator.
Great work, Year 11—your futures are looking bright!
