Students Inspired by Space Masterclass
On Monday, 13th January, Year 12 and 13 students had the privilege of attending a captivating Space Masterclass that offered a deep dive into the fascinating world of the space industry. The event featured an insightful presentation from Mr. Robin Mobbs of the National Space Academy, followed by a series of interactive activities that brought theoretical concepts to life.
The session kicked off with a presentation from an industry expert, who adeptly connected the A-level syllabus to real-world applications. This talk provided valuable insights into how students' current studies are directly relevant to careers in the space sector. Mustafa Bangash (13YC) remarked, "The presentation helped us see the tangible connections between our A-level modules and potential future pathways within physics."
Following the presentation, students engaged in a hands-on experiment designed to illustrate the effects of the vacuum of space. Using a marshmallow, the experiment demonstrated how the human body would react under such conditions, making complex scientific principles more accessible and memorable. Throughout the experiment, students were actively tested on their understanding of relevant A-level topics, further reinforcing their learning.
The workshop's variety of interactive activities provided a unique opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios. One of the most enjoyable tasks was designing and launching paper rockets. This friendly competition allowed students to experiment with their designs, applying physics concepts to create the best-performing rocket. Mustafa noted, "This hands-on experience turned our textbook knowledge into a tangible reality, sparking excitement about the possibilities within the space industry."
A standout moment of the day was when a student had the rare opportunity to wear an authentic Russian spacesuit and a fighter pilot's helmet. This experience added a thrilling dimension to the workshop, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
The event was made possible through the efforts of Mr. Robin Mobbs and the National Space Academy, along with the dedicated coordination by Miss Acik. The students expressed their heartfelt gratitude for this inspiring and educational experience. "We are all deeply grateful for the effort put into ensuring we do well and pursue our goals," said Mustafa.
This Space Masterclass not only enhanced the students' understanding of physics but also ignited their enthusiasm for pursuing careers in the space industry, making it an unforgettable day of learning and inspiration.
