Park High School Awarded Prestigious ‘ACE School of Character’
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Park High School has been awarded the prestigious ‘ACE School of Character’ award. This honour places us amongst just five other schools in London recognised for their outstanding commitment to character education. The award, presented by the Association for Character Education (ACE) the UK’s largest character education-based community, which celebrates schools that demonstrate best practices in nurturing good character in young people.
The ACE School of Character Award acknowledges institutions where character education is delivered in an explicit, planned, and reflective manner. This approach is designed to develop positive character qualities that empower students to thrive both as individuals and as contributing members of society.
“All the school’s virtues have very clear and well thought through definitions. Staff and students know what they mean in theory and what they look like in practice. This includes being explicit about what the virtues look like when enacted in the classroom, the school library, the office and further afield.” Tom Haigh CEO, Association for Character Education
At Park High School, we believe that education should focus not only on academic success but also on building strong character. Character education is more than an addition to our curriculum; it is a fundamental part of our school. Character education is essential in shaping the future of our students, as the ability to make good choices is crucial for personal and societal success.
“The school has shifted from a focus on ‘rules’ to ‘virtues’ when enabling positive behaviours. From extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation. Students’ decisions are more likely to be guided by their inner virtue, as opposed to avoiding sanctions and consequences. A good example of moving from 'compliance' to 'good character.'” Tom Haigh CEO, Association for Character Education
The Character Programme, led by Ms Little, has been seamlessly integrated across the whole school, ensuring that every aspect of the school fosters key character traits such as Resilience, Integrity, Curiosity, Compassion, and Teamwork. Her dedication and hard work have been instrumental in securing this prestigious award.
In response to the award, Mrs O’Dwyer, our Headteacher, expressed heartfelt gratitude: “My thanks to Ms Little who has skilfully led and supported us on this journey, to every single member of staff who models our character virtues every day, and to our students who have responded so positively to this work. I am immensely proud of this achievement and look forward to continuing our journey in character education.”
This award not only acknowledges our current efforts but also motivates us to further strengthen these qualities within our students and the broader community.
