Park High School Proud to Take Part in the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme

Our Assistant Headteacher and Politics Lead, Ms. Cramp, recently had the privilege of attending the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme, held from 20th to 22nd January. Over the course of the three-day event, Ms. Cramp joined 60 other teachers from across the UK to gain a deeper understanding of how Parliament operates and explore ways to inspire students to engage with politics and democracy.

The programme offered participants exclusive access to the inner workings of Parliament. Highlights included, a tour of the historic Houses of Commons and Lords, including the Speaker’s apartments; observing live debates and learning about the roles of MPs, Lords, doorkeepers, and select committees; meeting prominent political figures such as Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons; Lord McFall of Alcluith, the Lord Speaker; Nusrat Ghani MP; Sarah Binstead-Chapman, a doorkeeper; Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall; and Baroness Young.

Participants also had the opportunity to network with other teachers, share best practices, and brainstorm ideas to bring Parliament to life in their classrooms.

During the programme, Sir Lindsay Hoyle emphasised the importance of engaging young people in democracy, saying: "In my view, you are never too young to get involved in democracy and to make things happen - so giving teachers an insight into our world is a great way to pass that message back to the classroom."

Ms. Cramp’s experience was enriched by workshops, Q&A sessions, and even the chance to attend afternoon tea with MPs and fellow ambassadors.

Reflecting on these experiences, Ms Cramp said: "Attending the UK Parliament teacher ambassador training has been an incredibly enriching experience. Over the past three days, I've gained invaluable insights into the workings of our parliamentary system, which I can't wait to share with our students. This training has not only deepened my understanding of politics but also equipped me with practical tools to inspire and engage my students in the democratic process.  I am grateful to the Teacher Ambassador Programme and Park High for giving me this opportunity".
