Park High School Celebrates British Science Week

exploding hydrogen-filled balloons experiment

The week commencing 10th March was an exciting time around the school, as we celebrated British Science Week with a variety of engaging science activities. Throughout the week, students took part in hands-on experiments, including a science scavenger hunt and making giant bubbles.

We also welcomed over 300 primary school students to Park High to participate in a series of interactive science workshops. Year 5 students from Kenmore Park Junior School, Stanburn Primary, and Whitchurch Primary visited us on Friday, 14th March, to experience an afternoon filled with scientific discovery.

The workshops featured experiments such as a hair-raising demonstration of static electricity using a Van de Graaff generator, chemical reactions to make slime, and the exciting spectacle of exploding hydrogen-filled balloons. These activities provided young learners with a unique opportunity to explore scientific concepts in a fun and immersive way.

Amber Gilani, a teacher from Stanburn Primary School, expressed her appreciation for the event: "The Park High staff and students were fabulous. They were so kind, caring, and engaging with our children, who had the most amazing afternoon and are still talking about the experiments!"

Sixth Form students explaian experiments

Our Sixth Form science students played a crucial role in leading the sessions, supporting younger students, demonstrating the experiments and promoting a love for science. One of our students reflected on the experience: "Helping the younger students during British Science Week was an incredible experience. Seeing their excitement and curiosity reminded us why we love science. It was rewarding to share our knowledge and inspire the next generation of scientists."

In addition to British Science Week, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of three of our students who participated in the UK Chemistry Olympiad back in January. Omar Al Shdefat and Prithvi Rathod achieved Silver, placed in the top 25% of over 16,000 students, while Zalla Rahimzai earned the Bronze Award.

Science experiments

A huge thank you to our dedicated Science Department, especially Mrs Straughn and Miss Selarajah, who organised these spectacular events and inspiring a love for science among both our students and our visiting primary school students. We look forward to many more exciting science events in the future!
